Does Recently Deleted take up storage on iPhone? Yes — here's why

Yes. When you delete a photo or video on iPhone, it is not gone. It moves to the Recently Deleted album, where it stays for 30 days, and it still counts against your storage the whole time. Why is my storage still full after deleting photos?

Because deleting is a two-step process on iPhone, and most people only do step one.

Step one is tapping the trash (bin) icon. That removes the item from your library, so you no longer see it in Photos. Step two is emptying Recently Deleted. Until you do that, the file is still on your phone, taking up the same space it always did.

Apple designed it this way on purpose. Recently Deleted is a safety net. If you delete the wrong video by mistake, you have 30 days to get it back. After 30 days, iOS removes the item for good and the space returns by itself.

So there are two different truths after any clean-up:

• Removed from your library: the photos and videos you deleted are out of sight and out of your albums.
• Space actually free: this only happens once Recently Deleted is emptied, or once the 30 days pass.

Both are true at the same time. Neither is a bug.

How do I empty Recently Deleted on iPhone?

1. Open the Photos app.
2. Go to Albums and scroll down to Utilities. On newer versions of iOS, scroll down the main Photos screen until you see the Utilities section.
3. Tap Recently Deleted.
4. Unlock the album with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Apple locks this album so nobody else can see what you removed.
5. Tap Select in the top corner.
6. Tap Delete All (on newer iOS, tap the ⋯ button, then Delete All). If you only want to clear some items, tap them one by one and then tap Delete.
7. Confirm when iOS asks. This step is permanent, so read the message before you tap.

The album will empty, and the storage number in Settings › General › iPhone Storage should drop shortly after. If it does not update straight away, give it a few minutes or lock and unlock the phone.

Is emptying Recently Deleted permanent?

Yes. Once you tap Delete All and confirm, those photos and videos cannot be recovered from the phone. There is no second bin behind the first one.

Before you empty it, it is worth a quick scroll through the album. Recently Deleted holds everything you removed in the last 30 days, including anything a family member deleted while borrowing your phone. If something looks important, tap it and choose Recover instead.

If your photos are also stored in iCloud Photos, emptying Recently Deleted on your iPhone empties it everywhere. iCloud Photos keeps one library across all your devices, so a delete on one device is a delete on all of them.

Why does Apple keep deleted photos for 30 days at all?

Because mistakes happen, and a lost video of a birthday or a first step is far worse than a slightly full phone for a month.

Most people are surprised how often they use the safety net. A photo deleted while swiping too fast. A video that was the only copy. A screenshot that turned out to be a receipt. Recently Deleted gives you time to notice.

Do other apps have their own Recently Deleted?

Yes, and they can hold space too. Photos is the biggest one by far, but it is not the only place deleted items linger:

• Notes has a Recently Deleted folder in its folder list.
• Files has a Recently Deleted location under Browse.
• Voice Memos has a Recently Deleted folder.
• Messages can show recently deleted conversations from the Filters or Edit menu.

Each keeps items for a limited time before removing them for good. If you have deleted large recordings or files and the space has not come back, check these too.

What is the fastest way to actually free space?

If your phone is nagging you and you want the space back today, do these three things in order:

1. Delete the big things first. Long videos, screen recordings and duplicate photos usually take far more space than hundreds of ordinary photos.
2. Empty Recently Deleted in Photos using the steps above.
3. Check Settings › General › iPhone Storage and let it recalculate.
